A winch-out is not a tow. The car is not broken — it is simply somewhere it cannot drive out of: an unploughed alley, a snowbank, a ditch off a rural-edge road, soft grass after a wet spring, or the kerb it slid over on black ice. The job is to get it back onto pavement without adding damage.

That last part is where most recoveries go wrong. Hooking a strap onto a bumper, a tow eye rated for a flat towrope, or a suspension arm is how a $110 recovery becomes a $2,000 body repair. We pull from rated recovery points, and if a vehicle does not have one accessible we say so before pulling rather than after.

How a recovery is done properly
Assessment before any tension
The driver looks at what the vehicle is resting on, which way it needs to come out, and where the load can safely be taken. Two minutes of looking prevents most damage.
Rated recovery points only
Frame points, factory recovery eyes, or a bridle across proper structure. Never a bumper, never a control arm, never a tie-down loop meant for shipping.
Controlled winch line
Steady pull with a damper on the line. Snatch recoveries with kinetic straps are for off-road situations, not a car on a kerb in Berwyn.
Recovery boards and matting
For snow and soft ground, traction under the wheels often does more than pulling force and does it without stressing anything.

- Stuck in an unploughed alley. The classic Chicago February call — Berwyn, Oak Park, Logan Square and anywhere else with rear alley garages that get cleared last.
- Slid into a snowbank or over a kerb. Black ice on a side street, a shallow angle, and one wheel loses purchase. Usually straightforward if the underside is clear.
- Off the shoulder into a ditch. More common on the semi-rural edges — out past Arlington Heights toward Long Grove, or the outer stretches near Plainfield and Frankfort.
- Bogged in soft ground. Spring thaw, wet grass verges, and construction mud. Recovery boards frequently solve these without a pull at all.
- Dropped a wheel off a driveway apron or a raised kerb. Sloped Skokie and Oak Lawn driveways in an ice event produce a run of these every winter.

Stop trying to drive out
Spinning wheels dig deeper, melt snow into ice under the tyre and can overheat a clutch or a transmission. It makes the recovery longer and more expensive.

Snow, mud, a kerb, a ditch edge, a rock. It determines whether we pull, lift or board it out.

Many cars carry a screw-in tow eye in the boot with the jack. If yours does, get it out — it saves real time.

Stay out of the pull path
A winch line under load is dangerous. Everyone stands well clear and to the side, never in line with the cable.
Winter in Chicagoland
Our recovery volume is overwhelmingly seasonal. The first hard freeze and the first significant snow each produce a spike, and the third day after a heavy snowfall is worse than the first — the ruts have set, refrozen and turned into channels that steer the car for you. Alleys and cul-de-sacs are the last surfaces cleared anywhere in the region, so that is where the calls come from.
The other seasonal one is spring. Thaw plus rain makes verges and unpaved shoulders soft, and a car that pulls a few feet onto grass sinks. Those are usually board-and-go recoveries rather than hard pulls, which is faster and gentler on the vehicle. If your car is stuck but undamaged, say so on the call — it is a winch-out at $110, not a tow, and the two are priced differently.

What does a winch-out cost?
From $110 for a single-line pull of up to about thirty minutes on scene. If it turns out to need a second line, extended time or a heavier truck, we quote that before starting rather than adding it to the invoice afterwards.
Will winching damage my bumper?
Not if it is done from a rated recovery point, which is what we use. Damage happens when a strap is hooked to a bumper cover, a shipping tie-down or a suspension arm. If your vehicle has no accessible recovery point, we will tell you and use a different method.
Is a winch-out cheaper than a tow?
Usually yes, because the vehicle drives away afterwards. It only applies when the car is mechanically fine and simply stuck — if it will not run once it is out, you are looking at a tow instead and we will price it then.
Can you recover a car from a ditch at night?
Yes, 24 hours, with lighting on the truck. Night ditch recoveries near a live carriageway are handled with beacons and cones, and we will not begin a pull until the scene is safe.
