Roadside Flat Tire Change in Chicago and Suburbs

Changing a wheel on a quiet driveway is a twenty-minute job. Changing one on the shoulder of the Kennedy with traffic passing at seventy is a different proposition, and it is where a meaningful number of roadside injuries happen every year. If you are on an expressway, the right answer is almost always to stay in the car and let someone with a beacon bar do it.

  • from $75 · Your spare fitted and torqued to specification.
  • 25–40 min city · 30–50 min suburbs
  • Licensed & insured

We fit your spare, torque it to specification, and check that the spare itself is actually usable — which, on cars that have not had one checked in five years, it frequently is not.

What the service covers

  • Spare condition checked first

Temporary spares lose pressure sitting in the boot. If yours is flat or perished, fitting it is pointless — we will tell you before we start, not after.

  • Proper jacking points

The manufacturer's lift points, not a convenient bit of sill. Jacking in the wrong place bends floor pans and cracks plastic aprons.

  • Torqued to specification

A torque wrench, not an impact gun run to the stop. Over-tightening stretches studs and warps discs; under-tightening is how a wheel comes off.

  • The flat secured in the boot

Your damaged wheel goes back in the car so the shop can inspect it — it is often repairable, and it is always your property.

Know before you call

When a tyre change is not the answer

  • No spare at all. Increasingly common on new cars, which ship with a sealant kit instead. Sealant works on a small tread puncture and does nothing for a sidewall tear or a blowout.
  • A locking wheel nut with no key. Without the key the wheel is not coming off at the roadside — the vehicle needs to be towed to a shop with the proper extraction tools.
  • Two or more flats. Kerb strikes and pothole hits often take out both wheels on one side. One spare does not solve two flats.
  • Damage beyond the tyre. A bent rim, a torn wheel arch liner or a pulled suspension arm means the car should not be driven on any wheel until it is inspected.
  • A blowout at speed. The tyre is not the only casualty — check the arch liner, sensor lines and the wheel itself before deciding to drive on a temporary spare.

Step by step

What to do while you wait

  1. 1

Get off the live lane if you safely can

Even a partial exit onto a shoulder or verge is safer than stopping in traffic. Hazards on immediately.

  2. 2

Stay in the vehicle on an expressway

Belted, hazards on. Kennedy, Dan Ryan, Eisenhower and Stevenson shoulders are too narrow to stand on. Get out only if there is fire or smoke.

  3. 3

Tell dispatch which wheel and what happened

Pothole, kerb, slow leak or blowout — each implies different damage and determines whether we bring a change or a tow.

  4. 4

    Have the wheel-lock key ready

It usually lives in the glovebox, the boot well or with the jack. Finding it before we arrive saves the whole call.

Chicago potholes and kerbs

Chicago's freeze-thaw cycle destroys pavement, and late winter into early spring is our peak for tyre and wheel damage. Lower Wacker, the Eisenhower approaches, and the patched stretches of Ashland, Western and Cicero Avenue are reliable producers. A hard pothole hit at speed frequently takes the wheel as well as the tyre, which turns a $75 change into a tow.

The other local pattern is parallel parking. Kerbing a wheel on a tight Lincoln Park or Berwyn street is how sidewalls get cut, and a cut sidewall cannot be repaired — the tyre is finished regardless of how much tread is on it. If you kerbed it hard and it went down slowly overnight, expect to replace rather than repair.

Straight answers

Flat Tire Change — your questions

What if I don't have a spare?

Then a roadside change is not possible and we tow you instead — to a tyre shop if one is open, or to your home or workplace if it is 2 a.m. and nothing is. Tow rates apply rather than the $75 change fee, and dispatch quotes the difference on the call.

Can you change a tyre on the expressway?

Yes, and it is safer done by us than by you. The driver arrives with a beacon bar and cones and works from the protected side. You stay in the car, belted, until it is done.

How far can I drive on a temporary spare?

Check the sticker on the spare itself — the usual limit is 50 miles at no more than 50 mph. It is a get-to-the-shop device, not a wheel. Do not take a donut spare onto the Tri-State for an hour.

Can you plug or patch the tyre instead?

Not at the roadside. A proper repair requires the tyre off the rim and inspected from the inside, which is shop work. Fitting your spare and getting the damaged wheel to a shop is the correct sequence.
