Know before you call
What to do in the first ten minutes
- Check people before vehicles. Injuries first, always. Call 911 if there is any doubt at all.
- Get out of the live lane if the vehicles are driveable and it is safe. On an expressway, if they are not driveable, stay belted inside with hazards on.
- Photograph everything before anything moves — final positions, all four corners of each vehicle, plates, road markings and signage. Once cars are moved, that evidence is gone.
- Exchange details and get the police report number. Insurers will ask for it and it is much harder to obtain later.
- You choose the tow company. In Illinois you are not obliged to use whoever arrives first at the scene, and that is worth knowing before someone tells you otherwise.

Do I have to use the tow truck that shows up at the scene?
No. In Illinois you choose who tows your vehicle and where it goes. If a truck you did not call arrives and pressures you, you are entitled to decline and call the company you want — get the price in writing before agreeing to anything.
Will you bill my insurance directly?
Yes, for most major insurers. Tell dispatch the insurer and claim number if you have it. You get an itemised invoice with timestamped photographs attached, which is exactly what an adjuster needs to approve it.
How much is storage after an accident?
$45 a day in a fenced, camera-monitored lot, and the first 24 hours are free on accident recoveries. We would rather you took a day to decide where the car should go than rushed it.
Can I get my belongings out of a stored vehicle?
Yes, during business hours with photo ID. If something urgent is inside — medication, documents, a child seat — tell us when you call and we will arrange access sooner.
